PURELEI sought to develop product innovations that would fundamentally transform its competitive positioning. The goal extended beyond creating new products—the challenge was to develop innovations that would distinctively differentiate the brand, create ownable brand assets, and reduce the company's reliance on promotional strategies. This required a holistic approach that balanced creative thinking with strategic market insight.

The Company

Founded in 2017, PURELEI has emerged as a standout success in the German direct-to-consumer (DTC) startup ecosystem. The three founders built a compelling brand inspired by the Hawaiian spirit, expanding from fashion jewelry into a broader lifestyle offering including accessories, fashion, and beauty. By 2024, the company had achieved impressive growth, generating over €60 million in turnover while maintaining profitability—a remarkable achievement in a competitive market.

The Approach

Step 1: Comprehensive Market Analysis

I guided the team through a multi-dimensional analysis exploring:

  • Market dynamics and trends

  • Competitive landscape

  • Business performance metrics

  • Existing product drivers

  • Historical product innovation attempts

  • Communication strategies

  • Distribution channels

  • Pricing mechanisms

This systematic exploration uncovered critical insights and potential growth opportunities, ultimately resulting in the company's first formal product innovation strategy.

Step 2: Capability Building

To prepare the team for effective innovation, I conducted a targeted masterclass focusing on:

  • Techniques for uncovering meaningful consumer insights

  • Understanding barriers to product trial and purchase

  • Effective concept development methodologies

Step 3: Innovation Workshop

Leveraging the insights from the analysis and training, we convened an interdisciplinary team for an intensive one-day ideation workshop. The session concentrated on three high-potential innovation spaces identified during the earlier research phase. Our collaborative approach encouraged cross-functional thinking and creative problem-solving.

The Results

The strategic innovation initiative delivered tangible outcomes:
